What do I need to know about wires and light bulbs to pursue a career of Electrical Engineer?

Genius Hour Project

In the genius hour project, we had to pick our own driving question that interests us. After that we research about that topic and we talk about it. we use 20% of our time in school to research and make a model if you want to. Genius Hour is where passions and interests of students come to life. My driving question is What do I need to know about wires light bulbs to pursue a career of Electrical Engineer? In this I used 20% of my time researching about light bulbs and wires also making my model. My research is going to talk about the inside of a light bulb and how circuits work. I used 5 sources to find about my research.

Research Process:

Magnets:

  • The first wires ever made in the world was used as jewelry

  • Magnets have been used in motors for a long time.

  • The magnets work by the current flowing with the help of an electromagnet.

  • An electromagnet is very powerful, and it is coiled with a bunch of copper wires to have a fast conductor.

  • Whenever you turn off the switch it is blocked by any king of electrons to go in and start all the motors.

Light Bulbs:

  • In a light bulb the base has two metal contacts which are called screw thread contact and electrical foot contact.

  • The two metal contact work together for the electricity to go up the tungsten filament.

  • The tungsten filament is about 20 inches long but it is double coiled so it is very small.

  • The energy or atoms bumps into other atoms so it is transferring energy to the filament.

  • The tungsten filament in a light bulb is made up of thin metal. The light bulbs can explode or combust.

Wire Color:

  • Black wires are used for powering the circuits and it can also be used for power for a switch or outlet

  • Red wires are for interconnection for smoke detectors and other electrical components that are hard wired into the system.

  • Yellow wires can be used for fans and lights that you have to switch on to get it to work. Blue wires are used for a three or four way switch.

  • White and grey wires are neutral wires. White and grey wires can only be connected to other white and grey wires.

  • A green wire is used for grounding the electric circuit.

Wire Making:

  • The first step of the making of a wire happens in a factory. They take about 15000 pounds of copper.

  • The second step is twisting the wires into many smaller pieces so the wires are well conductive.

  • The third step is the cabling and that is where they put all the colors.

  • The last step of the wiring process is the electricity step and they test the wires.

  • On the right is my model and diagrams. First thing is that this model is a parallel circuit which is when we have two or more paths to let electricity go.

  • Second thing is that this model can do multiple things

  • Whenever you add the white and red wires to the paperclip it makes a faint light in both of them.

  • If you take out the red or white wires from my model there will be no light

  • The last thing that my circuit does is that if you have the paper clip touch the switch it will light up the one with the white wire in it.

  •  This model has helped me in creativity and understand circuits and how they work.

The Model:

In his 20%of time I gathered a lot of information and it helped me grow in persistence and how to become a electrical engineer. You can learn about light bulbs and wires with learning how they work and what they are made up of. My research process has also helped me in DRSS because it shows that if you are passionate about something then you can achieve it in no time. Electrical engineer might be the job that I might go into because I know the basics of light bulb and wires. To learn more about my genius Hour you could click the link below this page.
