Have you ever considered being healthy, well you can when you come to Wellness and Fitness? For four weeks of the school year we talked about tobacco and for the whole school year we worked on cardio-vascular endurance. In the tobacco unit we talked about how you should never have tobacco for many reasons because it can affect a lot of your body parts. What I grew in Wellness and Fitness was persistence in cardiovascular endurance, and the tobacco magnet. I grew in persistence in the tobacco magnet because I had to make purposeful shapes, and I had to have faces and they had to be circles so I had to try until I got the best circle. I grew in persistence in cardiovascular endurance because in my yellow chart my heart rate was low, so I had to try and try to get my heart rate up when doing exercises.
My first artifact is the tobacco magnet and I will talk about why tobacco is bad for you and why I grew in persistence. Tobacco is bad for you because it can affect your body getting cancer, tar in your lungs, and heart attack. The tobacco magnet was a project that we did, and we had to make a magnet showing social health effect (social health effect is how you get along with others and how others perceive you.) or mental/emotional health (mental/emotional health is when you handle your feelings, thoughts, and problems). I used social health effect in my magnet by saying that bad breath means no friends, and the no friend’s part is the social health effect. For the project we had to take a picture from collage and the picture had to explain why tobacco is bad for you. The goal of the project was to prevent middle school students from becoming a part of using tobacco. The requirements of this project were that the slogan had to relate to the projects goal and driving question. The message had to be 20 words max, it could be no longer than that. It also focuses on mental/emotional or social effects of tobacco use for audience. The last thing is that it must have craftsmanship. The steps of the process were: brainstorming ideas for magnet, we brainstormed our message and slogan in language arts, we made our drafts, we got feedback from the 6th graders and some of our peers, and then when we thought we did very good (involves persistence), we turned it in. I grew in persistence in this project because if you look closely to my first draft it has a lot of jaggedly lines for the circles and I could not get perfect circles. I got a lot of feedback on having circles because I didn’t have purposeful shapes. So, I had to try many times to get them purposeful, so I used persistence to not give up and I tried 100% to get perfect circles. My other drafts (2, 3, and 4) were improving but were not like my last draft. When you look at my last draft it looks more purposeful and has clean straight edges because of persistence, so I tried and tried until I got the best work I could possibly get.
My second artifact is the yellow chart. Cardiovascular endurance is when your heart is pumping a lot of blood and your running ability gets better, also there are a lot more benefits in cardiovascular endurance. The yellow chart was data that I collected and shows you what my RPE, heart rate mid, heart rate end, steps, activity, and date was when we did the activity. RPE stands for rate of perceived exertion; it tells you how much effort you put in to the exercise and RPE is not about time. 1 means that you did not breathe hard at all. 9 means that you worked out a lot and you were breathing very hard. Examples are the first game that we played was clump/excuse me please at 8/14/15 and my RPE was 4 and my heart rate was 136 and 199. Then I had to walk and jog at 9/11/15 and I got a RPE of 9 and heart rate of 200 and 200. I grew in persistence in the yellow chart because if you compare my first and sixth activity than I grew a lot in my RPE and heart rate because I got better of persistence and my cardio-vascular endurance got higher, which means that I grew in persistence because I pushed myself until I felt like I was working out and getting tired. I grew in persistence in a month by pushing myself to do the best I can and be fit and not get tired very quickly when running/jogging.
Now after you read this you might have in your plans to exercise more often and stop tobacco if you are having it or not to have if you were thinking about it. DRSS has made me a better person by using the five qualities especially persistence. I have grown in persistence because I used to give up a lot in school but when I came into STEM I found out not to give up, so I always try my best on my work and that is why I have all A’s. These things are not always easy for a lot of people just like me but thanks to persistence we never gave up and kept on trying. They are not easy for a lot of people because everybody has different strength and minds but if you try and try you can get better at it and like doing it to. These things will help you in the future because you will need all these things to help other people, especially in jobs and you will need persistence in doing all these cool things so you could have a better life.
